Half-Day Visits in Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is conveniently located on the path between Cusco and Machu Picchu! Stop by and visit us on your way through!
Here are some options for a half-day visit. You can also propose an idea of your own!
Herbal Workshop
This workshop is designed for those interested in learning more about the culture and wisdom of herbal medicine and remedies in the Peruvian Andes. It is an excellent opportunity to engage in conversations about local health beliefs and traditions. You’ll work side-by-side with local women and Sacred Valley Health’s staff to make an herbal preparation. At the end of the day, you’ll go home with a travel-size herbal balm or tincture.
(Please note – we offer anectdoctal stories about the use of herbs in the communities. We do not give medical treatment or advice.)
Chat with a local woman from a High-Andes Community
We will ask one of our local women partners from a community near Ollantaytambo to come down to town. Through a translated quechua-spanish-english conversation, she can share about her community and life in the high-Andes. She can also share a short weaving or other demonstration or activity with you.
Learn about our Community Health Worker Program
Learn about how and why our NGO operates. A local woman from one of our high-Andes partner communities will come down to town to share about her role as a community health worker and her daily life in her community. She’ll even show you how to make a stretcher from improvised materials and you’ll have a chance to practice! The day will also include some hands-on actvities and discussions with our Sacred Valley Health staff.
Responding to Medical Emergencies Training
This training is an ideal experience for individuals or groups seeking to learn essential skills to respond in emergency situations occurring in remote locations, far from medical facilities or professionals. Our Community Health Workers and staff lead this training, teaching participants valuable hands-on wilderness medicine content while simultaneously sharing their experience living in remote communities. The training focuses on improvised solutions and local resources and is trilingual (Quechua-Spanish-English). This is a very hands-on program where every participant has the opportunity to observe and then practice the skills taught. This experience does not result in certification.
Health Literacy & Education in the Sacred Valley
You’ll get to observe first-hand Sacred Valley Health’s office buzzing with life as it fills with people from high-altitude communities surrounding Ollantaytambo. You’ll get some background on our grassroots non-profit’s mission, and get to see first-hand part of a training with our community health workers.
(The training will be in Quechua, but don’t worry that you don’t speak the language; it’s a very visual curriculum and you’ll have a Spanish-English-speaking staff member with you at all times!)
This program is available only on training days.
We can also arrange accomodation in homestays or hotels, on-the-ground transportation, a visit to Machu Picchu, other tours/excursions, visits to other local NGOs, language classes, dance classes, cooking classes, and other cultural experiences!
