SVH Wilderness Medicine Training

The Wilderness Medicine Program is a collaborative program with Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic Wilderness Medicine Fellowship. This immersive learning experience, set in the rugged Andes Mountains of Peru, is unique in its approach. Participants learn wilderness medicine course content with Sacred Valley Health office staff, then practice valuable hands-on wilderness medicine skills taught by SVH promotoras.

In two years, we have trained more than 200 participants of different ages and nationalities. This training promotes cultural exchange and provides empowerment opportunities for the indigenous women that we work with. The Wilderness Medicine Program content was designed by emergency medicine professionals from Virginia Tech’s Carilion Clinic who train our office staff and promotoras annually.

 Course highlights include:

  • Introduction to Wilderness Medicine
  • Basic approach to emergency situations
  • Assessment of the wilderness traveler
  • Stabilization and transport of the injured traveler
  • Altitude sickness
  • Hypo- and Hyperthermia
  • Fractures and wound management

This program can be combined with our other opportunities and is open to a maximum of 30 participants per group. It is available to visiting and local groups alike. Trainings take place at our office in Ollantaytambo, Peru, or we can come to you if your group is staying elsewhere in the Sacred Valley and has ample space for the training! There is a 1 day and a 2 day option for this program.
