Meet Our Promotoras

Sacred Valley Health’s community health workers (or promotoras) are a crucial part of fulfilling our mission of improving health in the greater Ollantaytambo District. We are thrilled to be working with over fifty talented promotoras in thirteen communities. Learn more about them below.

Phase 1 Promotoras (this group began training with SVH in September 2012):

Teresa Echame Vargas

Teresa Echame Vargas

Teresa is 36 years old and works as both a promotora and docente in her community of Huilloc, where she lives with her husband and three children. She studied until the sixth grade. Teresa wants to be a promotora to help take care of the health of her community. She likes that her community asks her for health advice and is grateful to be a promotora.

Escolastica Castillo Obando

Escolastica Castillo Obando

Escolastica has lived in Pampallacta for many years, dating back to her grandparents. She currently lives with and takes care of her 98 year old mother. She is extremely enthusiastic and resourceful, often going beyond the call of duty to improve the health and access of her community. In addition to being a promotora herself, Escolastica is also the Manager of the Promotora Program.

Santusa Quispe Sinchi

Santusa Quispe Sinchi

Santusa is 26 years old and is the promotora and docente for the community of Huilloc. As one of our first generation promotoras, Santusa has been working with Sacred Valley Health for over three years. She lives in Huilloc with her husband and three small children. While Santusa only has a secondary education, she loves learning and is very happy to be part of the Promotora Program.

Beatriz Cisneros Llanos

Beatriz Cisneros Llanos

Beatriz is a promotora and also a docente from the community of Kelccanka. She is 39 years old and lives with her husband, Vidal, and her five children, Vilma, Moesis, Juliana, Genaro, and Florentina. She attended school through the first grade. As a promotora, she likes putting her trainings into practice and helping her neighbors. As a docente, she likes passing on health knowledge as well as visiting and helping other promotoras advance in their other communities.

Ana Cecilia Sinchi Osca

Ana Cecilia Sinchi Osca

Ana Cecilia is a promotora and also a docente. She was born in Huilloc and is 23 years old. She now lives in Kelccanka with her husband, Edwin, and has two small children, Alex and Nancy. She attended school until the sixth grade. Ana Cecilia has many roles in her community. In addition to her community health work, she also teaches pre-school, is an artisan, and works with tourists. She likes helping people in her community.

Matilde Quispe Macchaca

Matilde Quispe Macchaca

Matilde Quispe Machaca is a promotora from the community of Yanamayo where she lives with her husband and six children. She is 42 years old and originally from the community of Patacancha. When she was young, she took care of the sheep in the pasture instead of going to school. In addition to her community health work, she also serves as the secretary of her community’s General Assembly. She is very proud that her community elected her to be a promotora.

Phase II Promotoras (this group began training with SVH in September 2013):

Anastacio Apasa Sinche

Anastacio Apasa Sinche

Anastacio is 63 years old and is a male promotor for the community of T’Astayoc, where he lives with his wife, Eugenia. He also has five adult children who live throughout the Cusco region. He speaks a little Spanish and has had some primary school education. Most of Anastacio’s life has been spent on his “chakra” or tending to his land. In addition to serving as a promotor, he has also served as the Treasurer of his community and, for a period of time, worked as a promotor under a government initiative. He wanted to be a promotor because loves learning about public health and wants to teach what he has learned with his community.

Valentina Ttica

Valentina Ttica

Valentina is 47 years old and is the promotora and docente for the community of Rayan. She has 6 children, some of whom live with her and the others in Urubamba. She attended secondary school and is bilingual in both Spanish and Quechua. In addition to working as a promotora, she also serves as a conservation manager for her community’s ruins and archeological sites. Valentina wants to be a promotora so she can learn and heal members of her community.

Ignacia Silva Cruz

Ignacia Silva Cruz

Ignacia is 41 years old and serves as the promotora for the community of Marcuray. She has eight children and one grandchild. In addition to being a promotora, Ignacia is a director of the Marcuray Justice System “Rondas Campesinas”, which was initiated by the community due to the lack of government law enforcement. Ignacia wants to be a promotora because she wants to learn new things.

Bertha Quin Ugarte

Bertha Quin Ugarte

Bertha is a promotora and also a docente from the community of Soccma. She is 33 years old and lives with her husband, Hilario, and four children, Frank, Hilmer, Luzandra and Sheyla. She attended school until the sixth grade and is eager to work as a community health worker. As a promotora, she is glad to take care of people, such as her neighbors and family. Bertha also loves being a docente and being able to provide for her own family.

Fanny Quispe Cjuro

Fanny Quispe Cjuro

Fanny is 27 years old and is a promotora. She lives in the community of Rumira Sondormayo with her husband, Cristobal Quispe Laureata, and her two children, Rodrigo and Kusi. She has a secondary education and is bilingual in Spanish and Quechua. In addition to working for Sacred Valley Health, Fanny also serves as the Secretary for “Rondas Campesinos” or the Rumira Sondormayo Justice System. As a promotora and docente, Fanny is always eager to learn new information about health and teach it to others.

Phase III Promotoras (this group began training with SVH in January 2015):

Demecia Sinchi Echami

Demecia Sinchi Echami

Demecia is 26 years old and is one of the promotoras for the community of Challhuaccocha, where she lives with her husband and three children. She has a secondary education. Demecia wants to be a promotora so that she can learn more about health.

Flora Quispe Guru

Flora Quispe Guru

Flora is 26 years old and is one of the promotoras for the community of Chupani, where she lives with her husband and two children. Although she has limited schooling, she also serves as the Artisanal Secretary for her community. She wants to be a promotora so that she can learn new things and pass them on to her community.

Gregoria Yupanqui Yupanqui

Gregoria Yupanqui Yupanqui

Gregoria is 41 years old and is one of the promotoras for the community of Challhuaccocha, where she lives with her husband and two children. Gregoria likes learning and wants to be a promotora so that she can know more about health.

Lucia Castillo Yupanqui

Lucia Castillo Yupanqui

Lucia is 41 years old and is one of the promotoras for the community of Challhuaccocha, where she lives with seven children. She attended school until the first grade. In addition to serving as the promotora for her community, Lucia is also the president of her church. As a promotora, she loves learning at training sessions and always wants to know more about health.

Julia Carbigal Canal

Julia Carbigal Canal

Julia is 46 years old and is one of the promotoras for the community of Pomatales. She lives there with her husband and seven children. Julia attended school until the sixth grade but had to leave to help with tending to her chakra. She loves learning about health and wants to know more about how to help her community.

Margarita Cruz Rios

Margarita Cruz Rios

Margarita is 44 years old and serves as the promotora for the community of Chupani, where she lives with her husband and six children. She attended school until the second grade. Margarita wants to be a promotora because she wants to learn about the health issues that impact her community and help her neighbors.

Teresa Balladares Quin

Teresa Balladares Quin

Teresa is thirty years old and is one of the promotoras for the community of Pomatales, where she lives with her husband and two children. She has a primary school education and is also the treasurer of the agricultural Association for Pomatales. Her favorite part about being a promotora is checking up on her neighbors through house visits.
