COVID has had a devastating impact on marginalized, underserved communities here in Peru. With the country under one of the strictest lockdowns in the world, our communities and promotoras have been more isolated than ever before. We have been supporting our promotoras during this crisis by providing up-to-date COVID-19 education so they can continue to be frontline health resources in their communities, and our staff has been working diligently to prepare our program for a post-pandemic world. However, we have had a significant loss in income due to the lack of visiting university groups, and we need your help now more than ever!
Despite stringent quarantine measures, Peru has had one of the highest COVID-related death rates per capita worldwide. With tourism depleted, the economic impact has been equally severe. For many families in the region, their household income has disappeared entirely. Because we have been able to maintain our local staff on full-time salaries thus far, they have been able to provide their families with stable income.
